Hypebeasts: The avid followers of fashion trends

Image
As a teenager, you would think I would know about all the latest fads, trends, and all the Tic-toc dances but I don't :).  Sometimes I am oblivious to pop culture trends. I wasn't surprised when I did not know what I hypebeast was. Hypebeasts are the pro-surfers of fashion trends, they are always trying to catch the next wave. They are the first ones in line to buy the newest pair of Yeezy's or the newest $ 60,000 Birkin Bag. Ther are many definitions of a hypebeast. They may specialize in spending the money of others to buy popular names in fashion or the may have so much money that they can afford to splurge on pricy items. The hypebeast mainly adheres to the streetwear style.  Flame Kicks🔥 A hypebeast needs to have the coolest kicks or they will not be allowed into the renowned society of the Hypebeast. A trademark for the hypebeast is sneakers. Sneakers are babies for Hypebeast. If you scuff them you will have hell to pay. Keeping them...

Keep it simple: a look into minimalist fashion

Image
Minimalism is a trend fashion where less is more. It is more of a sustainable approach to fashion by working with your items of clothing to make a simple and effective look.  By limiting the number of your selection of clothing, it forces you to take a maximalist approach and make use of the items that you do have. Think of it as a puzzle, you don't really know what fits until you try it out. For this aesthetic buying, more expensive items with greater longevity are better than buying cheap items with a short shelf life. Let's face it how many times have we looked at our closet full of clothes and say, " I have nothing to wear!". This is the dreaded curse of indecision or for me a typical Monday morning. The minimalist aesthetic is a closet full of all the clothes that you can't live without. It's not necessarily getting rid of half your closet but it is keeping the items that you truly love. Take a tip from Marie Kondo and only keep the items that ma...

I woke up like this: the sleep wear trend

Image
I have resisted the temptation to wear my pj's to class after a long night of studying or insomnia. The sleepwear trend put all my concerns to bed. ( Sorry, I had to😅) Sleepwear is a trend that has made it out of the bedroom and into the streets. Comfort is king for this trend.  Silk and satin are indicative of this trend. Wearing a strappy silk shirt over a plain white t-shirt is my personal favorite. This is a simple way to strike a balance between style and relaxation. This trend was originally popular in the 90s' but has come back to the fashion scene. Who doesn't love a good throwback? This trend was popular in the 90s' teeny movies like Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You.   PJ sets are the ideal look for an informal kickback or lunch with friends. PJ sets are like the tuxedos of the sleepwear. This trend is elegant and comfortable. PJ sets can easily pass for a romper or a jumpsuit. Simplicity is key for this lounging look.   T...

To Dye or not to Dye: The Comeback of Tie-dye

Image
Tie-dye made drastic come back in 2020. Tie-dye was no longer reserved for hippies. Tie-dye has become an extremely versatile look in fashion. Tie-dye was a trademark for the counterculture in the late 60s and throughout the seventies.  Tie-dye combines art and fashion by creating different patterns by using different folding or rolling techniques. The creation of tie-dye proceeded the counterculture movement. The origin of tie-dye can be traced back to China and Japan 618 CE. Fabrics were dyed using natural materials such as berries, flowers, and other plants to dye fabrics. By placing these plants in hot water, the color from these items seeps out to create a dye for fabric. Then the fabric is placed in the dye. The longer you keep the fabric in water the more saturated it gets. By divvying up the fabric into sections vibrant patterns can be created. Today tie is EVERYWHERE from the traditional tie-dye t-shirt to a tie-sweater and sweat pants set to bath suits,  to...

The fashion of the 2010s was heavily influenced by the creation of social media and the increasing popularity of social media influencers. The 2010s was the decade known for logos, athleisure, fashion that transcends gender and size and comebacks. Comfortable style, this is not an oxymoron Athleisure effortlessly combined style and comfort. Athletic wear became a look that was not limited to the gym but has become an essential part of everyday wear. Companies like Lululemon and Fabletics have capitalized on this trend.  Athleisure has become the go-to look for students attending this irrationally early 8:00 am class. A chunky sneaker with leggings, an oversized sweater, and a baseball cap is the standard. Comfort and style are not sacrificed in athleisure. It displays comfortability and perceived athleticism. This signature look for the "healthy girl". In 2016, the Adidas tracksuit made a comeback. Avoid fashion faux pas by matching your Adidas Tracksuits with  Adid...

Perfecting the Art of being extra

From boyband fever to an obsession with Brittany Spears, the fashion of the 2000s was dynamic in the way that they built upon trends of the past decades. The 1980s introduced the art of being extra but, the 2000s perfected it. The trends of the 2000s focused on the spread of globalization and the introduction of the internet and that about changes in fashion that would start the trends of the new millennium. Department stores like Macy’s and J.C.Penney allowed the fast-fashion industry to flourish. This spread of fashion made clothes easily accessible making outfits to become more personable. Metallics The fascination with the new world of computers and coding manifested itself in metallic mini skirts, tube tops, and jumpsuits. Pop stars like NSYNC and Brittany Spears made metallics a popular go-to look for a night out. Popped Collars The coolest guys in your class wore not one but two collared shirts and popped the collar of both just to flex. Juicy Couture Tracksuits Juicy Coutu...

"Smells like Teenage Spirit": A look in to fashion of the 90s

The embrace of bold and bright colors was a trend that carried over into the 90s. People still wore their neon windbreakers and their baby doll dresses to complete their outfits  In the early 90’s, people could not resist dawning on all the colors of the rainbow. Their outfits were as florescent as their personalities. Women in the 90s were known for wearing bright colors on sweatshirts, crop tops, and leather jackets with shoulder pads, and denim jackets.   Crop Tops were a go-to for a 90’s summer look. Exposing your belly- button was a trend that I personally I’m no fan of but hey it was the ‘90s. Whether crop tops were worn by Britney Spears, Halle Berry, or TLC  crop tops were a go-to.  Sweatshirts with athletic bottoms were also a trend for athletic wear of the period that was even followed by royalty. Even Princess Diana wore her favorite sweatshirt with her running shorts for the morning grind. Outfits like this are even repeated today by people ...
