Perfecting the Art of being extra
From boyband fever to an obsession with Brittany Spears, the fashion of the 2000s was dynamic in the way that they built upon trends of the past decades. The 1980s introduced the art of being extra but, the 2000s perfected it. The trends of the 2000s focused on the spread of globalization and the introduction of the internet and that about changes in fashion that would start the trends of the new millennium.
Department stores like Macy’s and J.C.Penney allowed the fast-fashion industry to flourish. This spread of fashion made clothes easily accessible making outfits to become more personable.
Metallics
The fascination with the new world of computers and coding manifested itself in metallic mini skirts, tube tops, and jumpsuits. Pop stars like NSYNC and Brittany Spears made metallics a popular go-to look for a night out.
Popped Collars
The coolest guys in your class wore not one but two collared shirts and popped the collar of both just to flex.
Juicy Couture Tracksuits
Juicy Couture ( Juicy for short) a brand started by Gelma Nash and Pamela Skaist took a modern twist on a tracksuit. Juicy Couture tracksuits were Prior to this decade, These tracksuits were the pinnacle of athleisure in the 2000s.
Denim
A closet from the 2000s cannot be complete without denim. Whether they were worn under a dress or worn with a tube top. People would kill for a pair of True Religion jeans in the 2000s.
Capris
You don't see capri pants on women today as much as you did in the 2000s. Capris were very versatile in the 2000s. I still have my old capris with butterflies on the pockets from 2006. Capris came in all sorts of prints and fabrics but the most popular type capris were denim.
Cargo Pants
AKA the pair of pants that the have enough pockets to help you survive on a deserted island. My Dad is trying to bring these back, but some things should just say in the past.
Accessories
Flashy Belts
In the 2000s accessories were the saving grace for an outfit it made the difference between a good outfit and a great one. Flashy belts were the key to making an outfit more unique. They usually had sayings or word on them or they were just bedazzled to death.
Silicon Accessories
Silicon Accessories put a new twist on plastic bracelets of the 80s. It was not only a way to make your outfit more fun, but it was also a way to support a cause you care about."Bracelet activism" was popular when I was a kid. Causes like breast cancer with “I heart boobies” bracelets.
It is very interesting to me to hear about the fashion trends of the past, especially because I remember wearing some of these trends. Fashion is a very strange, yet essential way to express yourself and fashion is always changing based off of common trends set forth by celebrities or fashion icons and companies. As fashion trends become more popular, they move their different social systems and become more available to the public. Eventually, most trends that are loved and adored at one point, will me strongly rejecting at another, such as the cargo shorts you mentioned that your dad simply will not let go of (mine either by the way)!
