2010s The Decade Embracing Personal Style

The fashion of the 2010s was heavily influenced by the creation of social media and the increasing popularity of social media influencers. The 2010s was the decade known for logos, athleisure, fashion that transcends gender and size and comebacks.

Comfortable style, this is not an oxymoron
Athleisure effortlessly combined style and comfort. Athletic wear became a look that was not limited to the gym but has become an essential part of everyday wear. Companies like Lululemon and Fabletics have capitalized on this trend.  Athleisure has become the go-to look for students attending this irrationally early 8:00 am class. A chunky sneaker with leggings, an oversized sweater, and a baseball cap is the standard. Comfort and style are not sacrificed in athleisure. It displays comfortability and perceived athleticism. This signature look for the "healthy girl". In 2016, the Adidas tracksuit made a comeback. Avoid fashion faux pas by matching your Adidas Tracksuits with  Adidas trainers.

Normcore and nothing more

Another leisurely look of the 2010s is normcore. Normcore is the style know for being ordinary. To put this into context this is the look of tech giants like Steve Jobs or the lax style of Jerry Seinfield or the Marty McFly. This is the ultimate Dad-look. That has become popularized in the fashion industry. The "grandpa look"  became a fire look for the 2010s. Comfort was never sacrificed normcore.  If you wanted to wear Crocs with novelty socks, that was fine. The ultimate combo for this style was the jeans and chunky sneakers combo. This style has been picked up by brands like Balenciaga. This minimalist approach to fashion highlights the importance of effortless style.

Fluid Fashion
Inclusivity is a trademark of the 2010s. Billy Porter proudly wore a ball gown to the Academy Awards blurring the lines between masculinity and femininity.  Porter served as a model for the growth of fashion's inclusivity. He demonstrated that clothes are made for people breaking away from the binary terms commonly associated with fashion. Billy Porter is a part of the queer community and proudly represents them. It is hard for people to wear what they want out a fear of being judged. Fashion is a mode of expression in which people represent themselves despite what others may think. Fashion in the 2010s broke down gender constructs and went with the flow, adapting to this new change in fashion.  The fashion of this decade focused on enhancing the beauty of the person wearing the clothes. Fashion is created around who would wear the clothes rather than being worn by the clothes. Clothes should not only fit the person wear them but they should match their personality.  The people wearing clothes should be as important as clothes themselves.

Insta-Fashion

Instagram became a hub for fashion during the 2010s. Posts by social media influencers inspire their looks for their followers. Influencers have an impact on what their followers buy whether it is the same outfit the influencer or the use takes certain aspects of an outfit to make their own look. The Insta-Famous have become collaborators with brands such as Zara and Forever 21. Fashion became easily shareable with the creation of Instagram.
