To Dye or not to Dye: The Comeback of Tie-dye


Tie-dye made drastic come back in 2020. Tie-dye was no longer reserved for hippies. Tie-dye has become an extremely versatile look in fashion. Tie-dye was a trademark for the counterculture in the late 60s and throughout the seventies.  Tie-dye combines art and fashion by creating different patterns by using different folding or rolling techniques.

The creation of tie-dye proceeded the counterculture movement. The origin of tie-dye can be traced back to China and Japan 618 CE. Fabrics were dyed using natural materials such as berries, flowers, and other plants to dye fabrics. By placing these plants in hot water, the color from these items seeps out to create a dye for fabric. Then the fabric is placed in the dye. The longer you keep the fabric in water the more saturated it gets. By divvying up the fabric into sections vibrant patterns can be created.


Today tie is EVERYWHERE from the traditional tie-dye t-shirt to a tie-sweater and sweat pants set to bath suits,  to elegant tuxedos. Tie-dye is no longer belongs in just the bohemian box. Today, tie-dye can be edgy with a matching set of tie-dye sweats and crop top coupled with a chain necklace. Casual with a pair of dip-dyed jeans and a tie-dye shirt. This trend has also permeated the athleisure trend with the tye-dyeing of leggings and sports bras.

What I like about this trend that you can do it yourself.
