"Smells like Teenage Spirit": A look in to fashion of the 90s

The embrace of bold and bright colors was a trend that carried over into the 90s. People still wore their neon windbreakers and their baby doll dresses to complete their outfits  In the early 90’s, people could not resist dawning on all the colors of the rainbow. Their outfits were as florescent as their personalities. Women in the 90s were known for wearing bright colors on sweatshirts, crop tops, and leather jackets with shoulder pads, and denim jackets.   Crop Tops were a go-to for a 90’s summer look. Exposing your belly- button was a trend that I personally I’m no fan of but hey it was the ‘90s. Whether crop tops were worn by Britney Spears, Halle Berry, or TLC  crop tops were a go-to.  Sweatshirts with athletic bottoms were also a trend for athletic wear of the period that was even followed by royalty. Even Princess Diana wore her favorite sweatshirt with her running shorts for the morning grind. Outfits like this are even repeated today by people ...

The art of being extra: A look into '80s fashion

Fashion of the 80 takes the fashion of the decades prior and maximized it. The shoulder pads on power suits doubled, no color was too bright to wear, the hair was BIG, and no silhouette was too risky for the '80s. The 80's brought about a time where the grandiose and the kitschy were embraced. The eighties were about being the more grandiose and exciting versions of ourselves. A lot of 80's fashion experiments with the styles and silhouettes of decades prior. With fishnets stockings,  layered necklaces, and ripped shirts punk rock encouraged teenagers to question authority. The bangers of the 80's such as  Bad Reputation  by Joan Jett and  Another One Bites the Dust  by Queen encouraged a rebellion against what was perceived by designers. Trends were created by ordi...

A continuation of Seventies Fashion... Do you know that feeling where your stomach drops because it feels like your missing something? That's how I felt when obsessively reread my post from last week. I thought " This is okay, but I can do better than this." so I decided to do a second post on fashion in the 1970s because I felt like I briefly spoke about issues Women's Liberation,  the breakaway from heteronormativity and the prominence of cultural appropriation.   Furthermore, in my research I found out that a lot of fashion in the Seventies was influenced by African Culture yet, these fashions were not accredited to people of color, so I thought that it would be important to speak about Black Culture and African Fashion and it’s influence on the fashion of this decade. Hence, my decision to write a second blog post on  70s fashion.  The Seventies is a decade that is filled with fashion influencers from the stars that attended Studio 54 to the...

During this time designers looked back at fashion from the 1930s and 1940s for inspiration for the style of the 70s. Ease and comfort were the hallmarks of seventies fashion. Hippy culture continued throughout the early seventies as the protests of the Vietnam War became louder and more rambunctious. The hippy counterculture was a way to for people to break away from the convention.   Flares also are known as bell-bottoms flowed in the wind as hippies flamboyantly shouted their pleas for peace. Hippies completed their rebellious ensembles with headbands, floppy hats, oversized glasses, homemade jewelry. Bo Rhap In continuity in the seventies brought appropriated the style of Roma Gypsies of central Europe. Today, we refer to this style has Bohemian or Boho for short.
